The
Didgeridoo is an ancient wind instrument, used by the Australian aborigines in ritual and dance music. Its deep drone-like sound, rich in overtones, has become extremely popular in all kinds of contemporary music. Both Didgeridoos on this CD

The
Kalimba
(or "thumb piano") is widespread in Africa. It's similar to the
xylophone and generates a sweet musicbox-like sound, warmer than
the xylophone. The instruments consists of 9-20 springy metal plates (or
tongues) attached by a clamp to a wooden resonating board. For more resonance the board is usually mounted on a body of wood, calebash, coconut or even recycled tin cans. The kalimba is played by plucking
the free ends of the plates.

The origin of the
Udu, a clay pot drum with two openings, is located in Nigeria where it was used to communicate with ancestral spirits. The unique sound is often used in modern percussion music. The deep 'watery' sound is produced by rhythmically opening and closing the side hole. This is combined with sharp high-pitched
sounds produced by the fingers tapping on the body of the instrument. Similar instruments with only one top hole exist in India.

The
Bodhrán is
a variation
of the frame drum, unique to irish folk music. The relatively thick goat skin is stroked by a double-ended wooden beater with one hand while the other one uses a pressing technique against the inward side of the skin to rhythmically muffle the sound and change the pitch.
