Please select the FAQ:
1. If I try to select the Speedsoft MIDI cable in my MIDI sequencer it says "device in use by another program", why?
2. In VSampler's audio options I changed my soundcard to run at 44 kHz, but when I start VSampler next time it's back at 48 kHz, why?
3. In VSampler's audio options I can't set my soundcard to run at 44 kHz, it keeps running at 48 kHz, why?
4. All instruments play at wrong tune, why?
5. Why does the audio devices dialog take so long to come up?
6. How do I remove the "SpeedSoft MIDI cable" driver from my system?

1. If I try to select the Speedsoft MIDI cable in my MIDI sequencer it says "device in use by another program", why?
You tried to select the MIDI cable as *input* device, this is not possible (and makes no sense). You need to select it as *output* device. The chain is MIDI sequencer --> Cable --> VSampler, i.e. the sequencer sends MIDI data to VSampler.

2. In VSampler's audio options I changed my soundcard to run at 44 kHz, but when I start VSampler next time it's back at 48 kHz, why?
This problem is solved, please update to the latest VSampler version. At runtime VSampler now forces the setting made by the user in VSampler last time, on close it restores the initial card setting. Please check the next question as well.

3. In VSampler's audio options I can't set my soundcard to run at 44 kHz, it keeps running at 48 kHz, why?
You probably have activated external sync in your soundcard's control panel. That means, if you connected an external device e.g. per SPDIF and it runs at 48 kHz, your soundcard will sync to it and also run at 48 kHz. In this case VSampler can't change it. Close VSampler, disable external sync in yout soundcard's control panel, set it to 44 kHz, and restart VSampler.

4. All instruments play at wrong tune, why?
Because your soundcard is running e.g. at 48 kHz but inside of VSampler you did set it e.g. to 44 kHz. Solution: see previous question.

5. Why does the audio devices dialog take so long to come up?
Before showing the audio devices dialog VSampler is closing all enabled audio- and MIDI-ports for safety reasons. Unfortunately some soundcard drivers and especially MIDIyoke (if installed) take up to one second per enabled port, which quickly adds up to 10s or more. The solution:
  • MidiYoke users: disable all MidiYoke ports in VSampler and instead of MidiYoke use VSamplers own virtual MIDI cable (see manual chapter 1.3.3) or the Maple Virtual Midi Cable
  • in the VSampler dialogs "Options | MIDI | Devices" und "Options | Audio | Devices" disable all MIDI- and audio-devices you don't need in VSampler
  • avoid to use DirectSound- and ASIO-devices at the same time

6. How do I remove the "SpeedSoft MIDI cable" driver from my system?
  • in Windows Control Panel select "Sounds and Audio Devices"
  • select the "Hardware" tab, scroll down to "SpeedSoft MIDI cable" and click "Properties"
  • at the "Driver" tab click "Uninstall"
Alternative method (does the same):
  • in Windows Control Panel select "System"
  • select the "Hardware" tab and click "Device Manager"
  • scroll down and double-click on "Sound, Video and Game Controllers"
  • right-click on "SpeedSoft MIDI cable" and select "Uninstall"
Last step for both methods is to delete the driver file itself: Reboot Windows and delete "vsmidi.dll" in your Windows\System32 folder.
